Microsoft embrace biometrics

Microsoft and I/O Software of California have announced that they will be working together in order to provide biometric functionality in future versions of the popular Microsoft Windows operating system. This announcement will be of particular interest to those who see the potential of biometrics for network access and secure on line transactions. Microsoft has acquired I/O Software's biometric API (BAPI) technology together with the SecureSuite core authentication technology in order to provide users with a higher level of network security based upon a secure and reliable personal authorisation methodology.

Comment. This development surely represents a significant move forward for the biometrics industry in general, providing the potential for biometric functionality on every Windows desktop. It will be most interesting to see this unfold, especially with regard to future Windows based application development.

Infineon launch the Silicon Trust

The Silicon Trust is a global partnership program founded by Infineon Technologies to provide a comprehensive approach for easy-to-integrate security systems solutions based on Infineon’s security ICs. The program combines Infineon’s proven expertise in highly secure semiconductor solutions for chip card, biometric and high-encryption applications with the application-specific know-how of the program partners using Infineon’s security devices. The Silicon Trust is desiged to assist companies dealing with system integration or development of a variety of complementary solutions to solve particular applications needs, including hardware, software, or toolkits. The program is also designed to serve as a resource for consultants working on hardware and software products.

Initial partners include companies from across Europe and North America: Astro Datensysteme, Biometric Identification, CE Infosys, Dermalog, Faktum, Infineon Technologies, Mytec Technologies, Precise Biometrics, Siemens Information and Communications Mobile, Siemens PSE Austria, and Veritouch.

Best practices

A new Best Practices in Testing and Reporting Performance of Biometric Devices paper has been produced under the auspices of the UK CESG Biometric Working Group. It is hoped that this initiative will help towards a more common approach in testing and describing biometric devices and their relative performance. This is intended as a working document and interested parties are invited to comment accordingly. It is available from the AFB web site Best Practices Document

Biometric API

BioAPI released. The BioAPI specification version 1.00 has now been released by the BioAPI Consortium and is available on the BioAPI web site. This is a very interesting development which should make life a lot easier for application developers wishing to incorporate biometric technology into their programs. In support of the initiative, JSoft have made available the BioAPI Helper utility which facilitates having the specification on the developers PC for handy reference and annotation. Details from JSoft.
